Lighting a modern living room: lights, chandeliers and lighting ideas

By the Alméa team 8 min read

Lighting a modern living room means finding the balance between clean lines and warm light. Sleek ceiling light, sculptural chandelier, graphic pendant, minimalist wall lights, indirect LED: here is how to choose the lights for a modern living room and combine them so the room looks good by day and in the evening.

Modern style has a trap: with so much restraint, the room can become cold. Smooth surfaces, neutral colours and a single powerful ceiling light quickly create an office feel. Light is precisely what warms up a contemporary interior without cluttering it.

This guide focuses on style. For the general rules on size, height and number of light points, our guides to the living room chandelier, the living room ceiling light and the complete living room lighting plan go further.

1. What makes modern living room lighting

A modern living room light has three hallmarks: a simple, readable shape (circle, line, cylinder, arc), little ornament, and light that is as carefully thought out as the object. In a modern living room, you often see the lighting effect more than the light itself: a blade of light on a wall, a halo on the ceiling, a floating globe.

Modern style pairs well with raw materials so it does not turn cold, as our article on contemporary style explains.

2. Materials and finishes in a modern living room

Modern grey living room with pendant lights above the table
Material Effect Pair with
Matt black metal Graphic, fine line White walls, light wood
White metal Discreet, blends into the ceiling Very pared-back interior
Gold or brass finish Warmth, reflections Midnight blue, sage green, marble
Travertine, stone Mineral, soft, textured Linen, polished concrete, wood
Light wood Warmth, Nordic feel Off-white, grey

The rule that works: one dominant material for the lights, echoed elsewhere in the room (table leg, frame, handles). Two finishes at most are enough to keep everything coherent.

3. The modern living room ceiling light

The modern ceiling light is often a very flat disc, ring or geometric shape with integrated LED. It suits ceilings of 2.40 to 2.50 m, where a pendant would get in the way. For a 20 to 25 m² living room, a diameter of 40 to 60 cm is a good guide.

Its drawback: on its own, it flattens the room under even light from above. Choose a dimmable model and never treat it as the only source. All-LED models are compared in our guide to the LED pendant and LED ceiling light.

4. The modern living room chandelier

The modern chandelier no longer has crystal drops: it is a light sculpture, made of rings, slender branches, spheres or a geometric structure. It comes into its own when the ceiling is 2.60 m or higher, or above a table.

Situation Guide size or height
Diameter in the centre of the living room (length + width in m) x 6 to 8 cm, so 54 to 72 cm for 4 x 5 m
Walkway At least 2.10 m under the lowest point
Above the coffee table Bottom of the light at around 1.40 to 1.60 m from the floor
Above the dining table 65 to 85 cm above the tabletop

Shapes, materials and proportions are detailed in our guide to the modern designer chandelier.

5. Pendants: cluster, linear, sculptural

  • The cluster: three to five globes at different heights, ideal in a corner or above a round table.
  • The linear pendant: a light bar above a rectangular table, very contemporary.
  • The sculptural piece: a single strong pendant in stone or metal that becomes the focal point of the living room.

A three-light black metal chandelier, such as our 3-light black iron diamond chandelier, brings the graphic touch typical of the modern living room. For other shapes, see our guide to the designer pendant light.

6. Modern wall lights

Wall lights are the secret weapon of the modern living room: they give light at face height and define the wall. The shapes that work best are lines, half circles, discs set off the wall and double-beam up and down models. Fit them at around 1.60 to 1.70 m from the floor, on either side of the sofa or a TV unit.

Sleek LED models, such as our minimalist C-shaped LED wall light, suit clean lines. To go further, read our guide to the designer wall light and the one on the up and down wall light.

Alméa tipIn a very white modern living room, a travertine or wooden wall light avoids the showroom effect: the shape stays simple, but the material brings the warmth that is missing.

7. Integrated LED and indirect light

Indirect light is the signature of the modern living room: an LED strip in a cornice, behind a TV unit or under a floating shelf creates a halo that makes volumes “float”. The principle is explained in backlighting: the secret of walls that seem to float.

Recessed spotlights also have their place, as long as you do not cover the whole ceiling in a grid. Our comparison wall light or recessed spotlights helps you decide.

8. Colour temperature, CRI and dimmers

Setting Guide for a modern living room
Colour temperature 2,700 K for mood, 3,000 K at most in the living area
CRI 90 or more, for true colours and materials
Total output 100 to 150 lumens per m², all sources combined
Dimming At least on the main source

4,000 K, sometimes associated with modern style, makes a living room cold in the evening. A high CRI matters particularly with natural materials: see CRI explained.

9. Three typical lighting plans by living room

Small, 2.40 m ceiling Flat dimmable ceiling light 2 wall lights LED strip behind the TV unit
Medium, 20 to 30 m² Sculptural pendant above the coffee table 2 to 4 wall lights Lit shelf
Large or high ceiling Modern chandelier in the centre Wall lights in a row Lit cornice

10. Mistakes that spoil the modern effect

  • A single powerful ceiling light: flat light, office feel.
  • Too many spotlights: a ceiling full of holes is anything but modern.
  • Mixed colour temperatures: a cold LED next to a warm bulb gives the game away.
  • Too many finishes: black, gold, chrome and wood together blur the lines.
  • A light that is too small: in the middle of a large living room, it looks lost.
Alméa tipLight your living room in the evening using only the mid-height and accent lights, with the ceiling light off. If the room already feels pleasant, your modern lighting plan has worked.

11. In short

To light a modern living room, choose simple shapes and one or two finishes, a high light suited to your ceiling (flat ceiling light, pendant or sculptural chandelier), sleek wall lights at face height and a touch of indirect light. Stay between 2,700 and 3,000 K, with a CRI of at least 90 and a dimmer. It is the light, more than the object, that will make the room modern.

Frequently asked questions

Which light for a modern living room?

Combine a high light with simple shapes (flat ceiling light, pendant or designer chandelier), sleek wall lights and indirect light. A single light is never enough to create atmosphere.

Which ceiling light for a modern living room?

A flat ceiling light with integrated LED, disc or ring shaped, of 40 to 60 cm for a 20 to 25 m² living room. Choose a dimmable one and add wall lights.

What size of chandelier for a modern living room?

Add the length and width of the room in metres and multiply by 6 to 8: you get a diameter in centimetres. For 4 x 5 m, a chandelier of 54 to 72 cm.

What colour of light fitting for a modern living room?

Matt black and white remain the safest. A gold finish warms up a dark interior, stone and light wood soften a very white living room.

Which colour temperature in a modern living room?

2,700 K for mood, 3,000 K at most. 4,000 K is too cold and best kept for work areas.

How do you light a modern living room without a ceiling light?

With wall lights on either side of the sofa, indirect light on a piece of furniture or a cornice, and an offset pendant above the coffee table.

Do you need spotlights in a modern living room?

A few well-placed spotlights to light a picture or a bookcase, yes. A full grid across the ceiling, no: it flattens the light.

How do you make a modern living room feel cosy?

Add several low and mid-level sources, choose warm light, a dimmer and at least one light in a natural material, such as stone or wood.
